21Aug2009

Manhattan Perfect

  1. Dash of Dry and Sweet Vermouth
  2. 2 oz American Whiskey
  3. build or shake
  4. Garnish with lemon twist or olive

The orginal Manhattan was made with a dash of bitters.  Today it is usually left out because of its strong flavor.

[..YouTube..] any sort of drink that involves straight liquor with no juices should be traditionally stirred not shaken. shaking everything is just a trend that started to happen more in the 70's. shaking will oxidize the drink which in turn if you do it too hard or long will begin to break down the alcohol in the drink. you can tell thats happening when the drink becomes cloudy.if you do shake a martini/manhattan be very gentile and don't do it for very long

[..YouTube..] You're right. Most bartenders here in the States prefer shaking the drinks instead of stirring. I agree the best way to make the drink is to stir. Thanks for your comment.

[..YouTube..] Shaken manhattan? Most people can't tell the difference? Olives in manhattans? I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to cocktail recipes but i've never seen anyone do that. Shaking that much vermouth just makes it taste fizzy...

[..YouTube..] No such GD thing as olives in a Manhattan. It's not a martini, it's a bloody Manhattan. And they DO HAVE BITTERS. I don't care that he says that bitters are too strong; it's one of the ingredients of this classic, balanced cocktail--and he omits it every time. Green/stuffed olives in bourbon/rye are wretched. He should be shot out of a cannon at the circus.

This is a perfect Manhattan. I use a full ounce measure as one part. My whiskey preference is Jack Daniel's but rye whiskey is traditional. 3 parts Jack Daniel’s Old #7 (whiskey of your choice) ½ part dry French vermouth ½ part red French vermouth Dash of Angostura Bitters Stir and chill over several large ice cubes, strain into a classic cocktail glass. Serve with a twist of lemon

Good recipe. This is the way it was made years ago. Most American bartenders don't use bitters unless requested by the customer.

I think some ppl ask for a shaken martini just because they wanna be like James Bond. :P
jtiano
When I first started bartending Martinis and Manhattans where never shaken. They were always stirred. You're right it was the James Bond movies that changed things.
